In Southeast Michigan, indoor air quality can be harmful to your health just as much as polluted air outside is at certain times of the year. Mold spores, pollen, dust, humidity and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are all irritating to a person’s health and can also cause extensive problems with a home’s structural integrity.
Mold spores thrive when the humidity in a home strays from the acceptable level of 30-60 percent humidity. Mold can grow on walls, surfaces and within carpet, causing allergy symptoms, asthma and other respiratory illnesses. Utilizing a dehumidifier can prevent these problems from occurring by removing excess moisture from the air and improving the indoor air quality.
Poor purification in a home causes pollen, dust and pet dander to accumulate. Luckily, removing these particles is achievable by using appropriate filters with the HVAC system of the home as well as whole-house purification units or stand alone units in certain rooms of the home.
VOCs are released from newer products such as carpet, drywall, cupboards, countertops and paint. Most of this off gassing takes place within the first year of being installed but VOCs can be around much longer than that. These toxins can be removed from the air you breathe by using an air purifier unit. HEPA and carbon filters do a great job of making indoor air healthier.
