For homeowners in the Royal Oak, Birmingham, Troy, and the Rochester Hills area, energy savings is a priority. There’s a simple way that homeowners can track how much electricity their homes use in order to effectively reduce energy consumption and thereby increase energy savings. First, learn how to read your electric meter, and then reduce consumption with the tips below.
Reading your meter
Your home’s electric meter can provide you with valuable information about how much energy your home uses, beyond the dollar amount your bill shows. Homeowners in general are confused by electric meters, even though they are labeled with numbers from one to nine. The key to reading a meter is to track it from right to left, which is the opposite of what we’re accustomed to.
Here are the steps to follow:
- First, record the numbers on the meter, starting at the farthest dial to the right, working your way to the left.
- If the dial lands on a specific number, record the number directly after it if the dial to the right shows that it has gone beyond zero.
- If the dial lands on a specific number, record the number preceding it ONLY IF the dial to the right HASN’T passed the zero yet.
- When the dial lands in the middle of two numbers, record the lower number.
- Continue across the meter recording the dial’s indicated numbers.
Regular readings, which you can choose to do weekly or monthly, will show you how much electricity your home’s systems use overall.
