The Difference Between a Heat-Recovery Ventilation System And An Energy-Recovery Ventilation System

Reducing energy losses from ventilation systems can also reduce heating and cooling costs for your home. Two types of energy-recovery systems — heat-recovery ventilation and energy-recovery ventilation — can reduce energy losses, thereby saving you money. Although similar in some respects, they differ in how they use water vapor.

Both systems conserve energy by the transference of energy through heat exchangers. An energy-recovery ventilator (ERV) transfers water vapor in addition to heat energy, while a heat-recovery ventilator (HRV) transfers only heat energy. During the hot summer months, the cooler air inside a home transfers cooling energy to the warmer incoming outside air supply.  During the cold winter months, the warmer air inside a home transfers heat energy to the cooler incoming outside air supply.

Because an energy-recovery ventilation system utilizes water vapor from exhaust air moisture, the humidity levels inside your home maintain a more constant balance. The U.S. Department of Energy’s research states that most energy-recovery ventilation systems can capture 70-80 percent of the air energy within your home and transfer that energy to the incoming air supply. In states with cold winters, like Michigan, installing an energy-recovery ventilation system is more cost effective than in states with milder winters.
