Take These Five Steps To Maintain Your Ducts And Keep Them Contaminant-FreeIs there anything more important than the quality of the air your family breathes? The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has found that indoor pollutants like dust, mold spores, pollen and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) pose a significant health risk.

Your home’s air ducts provide an important function and if not clean, every time your heating and cooling system kicks on, these contaminants can be circulated throughout your home. There are things that you can do to keep your duct work contaminant free and functioning effectively.

Eliminate sources of debris
Vacuum your home regularly with a HEPA cleaner or use the most efficient filter bags available for your model. If you have any remodeling work that produces dust, be sure to seal off all registers before you begin such work and clean up any remaining dust before turning your heating and cooling system back on.

Air filter replacement
An important step in duct maintenance is to replace your system’s filters regularly with the highest efficiency air filter available. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for filter changing but change them more frequently if filters become clogged.

Clean cooling coils and drain pans
Residue that collects in cooling coils and drain pans can eventually make its way into your home. During a service call or duct maintenance, have your heating and cooling technician look these over.

Humidity control
One important pollutant (mold) requires moisture to grow which is why you must maintain proper humidity control — not always the easiest thing here in Southeast Michigan.  Humidity control can be achieved by properly sealing and insulating your home, while making sure that areas like attics and crawlspaces are well ventilated. Additionally, a well functioning humidifier will ensure that over-humidification does not take place.
