SEER And HSPF: Key Considerations When You're Choosing A Heat PumpShopping for a new heat pump? There are so many things to consider—price, type, installation costs, rebates, consumer reviews and more. Another important consideration that should not be overlooked is the unit’s efficiency rating. Efficient heat pumps use less energy, which benefits both the environment and your electric bill.

A heat pump’s efficiency is measured in performance ratings known as SEER and HSPF. These ratings are clearly listed on the unit’s EnergyGuide label, so you can easily compare the numbers when shopping for heat pumps. If you are planning to install a heat pump, these are ratings you should know.

Seasonal energy efficiency ratio (SEER)

This ratio compares the amount of electricity the unit requires over the course of the season to the amount of cooling performance (the amount of heat removed from the conditioned space) it provides. Higher ratings mean higher efficiency. A heat pump with a high SEER rating will cost more to purchase, but will pay for itself over time with reduced energy bills. Look for a SEER between 14 and 18.

Heating seasonal performance factor (HSPF)

HSPF measures the heating efficiency. The rating is determined by dividing the total heat delivered by the total electrical energy used. The higher the HSPF rating, the more efficient the unit. Heat pumps with an HSPF rating between 8 and 10 are highly efficient models. As with SEER, a high-HSPF unit may cost more initially, but will quickly pay for itself with lower winter utility bills.
