It’s springtime! For residents of the Grosse Pointe areas, that means allergy season is in full swing. As bad as allergies can be outdoors, there’s no guarantee you can escape them by hiding inside. Your best bet is to take steps to improve your indoor air quality, which can help reduce allergy symptoms in your home.
Change your filter
The first tip is to keep your furnace filter changed. The air conditioner sends cool air through the same filter that’s used by the furnace, so this piece of equipment sees year round use.
The filter is designed to catch tiny particles, like dust and other allergens. As it does its job, it ironically becomes less efficient at doing its job. Check the filter every month to make sure it can capture the maximum amount of particles and reduce allergy symptoms in your home.
Seal your ducts and home air leaks
Sealing ducts and air leaks in your building is a great way to save energy, but it can also help reduce allergy symptoms. This is because unfiltered, contaminated air can be sucked into the house through leaks.
Use duct mastic, which comes in a tub or caulk dispenser, to seal joints and tears in any ducts you can get to (like those in the attic or garage). Leaks in the building itself are usually found where two or more construction materials come together (like windows or door frames). Use caulk for small spaces, and use expanding spray foam for larger gaps.
Keep up with preventive maintenance
Making sure your HVAC system is clean and tuned up will save energy, of course, but it can also help to reduce allergy symptoms. This is because dust, pollen and even mold or mildew can build up in the equipment. As indoor air passes through, it picks up these contaminants and distributes them through your ductwork. Stay on top of this by having the system cleaned regularly.
