24/7 Emergency Service

A number of creature comforts — those things that make us most comfortable in our own homes — require the use of energy. In an effort to manage your energy bills you may think you need to make drastic changes or invest a lot of money, but small changes can add up to big savings. Here are seven simple ways for you to start saving money in your Metro-Detroit area home.

1. Flip the switch. Turn off lights and electronics in rooms that are unoccupied and enlist family members to do the same.

2. Get with the program. One of the easiest ways to lower energy costs is through the use of a setback or programmable thermostat.  Enjoy year-round savings by programming the unit according to your family’s schedule, and raising or lowering the temperature by several degrees for times you are asleep or away.

3. Don’t linger in the shower. Rather than watch money go down the drain, reduce the time you spend in the shower to conserve energy and water.

4. Change your filter. Your heating and cooling equipment work hard for you year round, and even harder with a dirty filter. In addition to scheduling annual maintenance, be sure to make regular filter changes to help manage your energy bills and reduce wear and tear on these units.

5. Turn down the heat. Subtract a few degrees of heat and add a sweater and a pair of slippers to stay toasty instead.

6. Learn what off really means. Most electronics and some appliances use standby power even when turned off. Plug these items into a power strip, which you can turn off when not in use.

7. Rethink your laundry strategy. Wash clothes in cold water when possible and on warm weather days hang laundry outside to dry rather than running the clothes dryer.
