Are you debating whether or not you should sign up for an HVAC maintenance agreement? Learning more about these agreements can help you make an informed decision.
What Is an HVAC Maintenance Agreement?
By signing a maintenance agreement, HVAC customers pay an annual fee that guarantees them certain services. A basic agreement can be relatively inexpensive and simply cover twice-yearly system checks and tune-ups. More costly plans can cover the parts and service for specific issues, a discount on additional parts and major repairs, and/or emergency service.
The Pros
The annual system tune-ups included in a maintenance agreement can keep your system working at maximum efficiency, which can save you money on your energy bills. During these visits, your technician can also catch small problems before they escalate into costly repairs or equipment failures.
The Cons
A major drawback of many HVAC maintenance agreements is the cost. The prices charged will vary depending on the services included, and between companies. Another downside with a plan that covers extras such as parts and repairs is that you’ll pay the annual fee even if you don’t use those services.
Weighing the Positives and Negatives
If you’re installing a new HVAC system that’s covered by a manufacturer’s warranty, paying for an additional maintenance plan won’t be cost effective. If you have older equipment, however, the cost of a plan may well be worth it. Before you decide:
-
Do some cost comparisons. Check what you’ll pay for twice-yearly checkups, and compare those figures to what you’ll pay for a service agreement.
-
Consider the value of emergency service. If the agreement includes it at a reasonable cost, and your equipment isn’t new, the yearly fee may be a worthwhile investment that also provides peace of mind.
-
Choose a reliable HVAC contractor. Make sure that the company is trustworthy, honest and reputable.
-
Always read what you’re signing. Understand the scope of the services you’re paying for, and go over the details included in the fine print.
