Are you having problems heating new rooms that you have recently added to your house? Do you have a “non-ducted” heating system that could use a little assistance? If so, a ductless mini-split heat pump could be the solution you are looking for.
Ductless mini splits work by producing conditioned air in a compressor located outside of your house, which distributes that air to up to four different indoor air handlers via a ductless conduit. Since no ducts are involved, there is no air loss and it all reaches its destination. This is a substantial improvement over traditional forced-air systems that can lose up to 30 percent of their conditioned air before ever reaching your living spaces.
Because of the simplicity of these systems, they are easy to install. The conduit merely needs a three-inch hole to pass through in each room that you want to install an air handler in. The compressor can be kept up to fifty feet away from the house, allowing you to reach opposite ends of the house with just a single compressor. This also muffles some of the noise the outdoor unit makes during operation.
The air handlers themselves are very flexible and can be incorporated into your home in a number of ways. You can hang them from the ceiling or wall, or you can purchase a floor-standing model. They usually have a high-tech, sleek jacket so that they aren’t eyesores. You control the temperature you want through the thermostat on the air handler.
Since each air handler has its own thermostat, you can have different zones that are varying temperatures in different parts of your house. This allows occupants of one area to have a different temperature than another without disturbing anyone. Many modern models come with remote controls to make their operation even simpler. The air handlers don’t need to be on when the room is empty, so you can simply turn them off to conserve energy.
