24/7 Emergency Service

Southeast Michigan homeowners are switching to tankless water heaters in record numbers lately. Since these units don’t need to store a tank of water and expend energy keeping it hot, they save local residents a lot of money on utility bills. The units pay for themselves rather quickly and it’s pure savings and all profit from there on for the homeowner. Tankless systems, also known as on-demand or instantaneous water heaters, may even raise your property value.

One thing to keep in mind, however, is that since tankless units are engineered so differently from traditional tank-model water heaters, it can be rather difficult to replace one with the other. In fact, you may need more than one tankless unit to cover your home’s hot water needs. That doesn’t mean you’d ever run out of hot water (as you can with a storage-tank heater when the tank empties), but the flow could slow down if you don’t plan your tankless water heater setup properly. Natural gas-powered demand water heaters provide higher flow rates than electric models, and this may factor into your planning as well.

Sizing factors to consider

Taking into account the needs of your household for simultaneous appliance, sink and shower usage, the size of your family and the layout of your home, your contractor can configure a system for you, decide if you need multiple units, and determine the best potential locations. You may opt to have a separate tankless water heater dedicated to your back yard hot tub or your laundry room, for instance. Your HVAC expert may instead suggest installing your units in parallel in the same area. This is fairly easy to accomplish, since tankless systems are much smaller than their storage-tank counterparts.
